The Science of Kangen Water
Water That Works at the Cellular Level
Enagic's medical-grade ionizers transform ordinary tap water into electrolytically reduced, hydrogen-rich alkaline water — backed by 50 years of Japanese research.
What Is Kangen Water?
Kangen Water® (還元水) is a registered trademark of Enagic Co., Ltd. The word "Kangen" means "return to origin" in Japanese — a philosophy that water should be returned to its natural, life-sustaining state before industrial processing stripped it of its properties.
Through a process called electrolysis, Enagic's machines split ordinary tap water into two streams: alkaline water rich in molecular hydrogen (H₂) for drinking, and acidic water for external uses. The result is water with measurably different properties from what comes out of your tap.
The Science
Three Properties That Matter
Restoring Natural Balance
Modern diets and environmental stressors push the body toward acidity. Kangen Water's alkaline pH (8.5–9.5 for drinking) may help buffer this acid load. The body tightly regulates blood pH, but the quality of what you consume still matters — alkaline water is gentler on the digestive system and may support the body's natural buffering mechanisms.
Enagic machines produce 5 water types from pH 2.5 to pH 11.5 for different applications.
Antioxidant Potential
ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential) measures a substance's ability to oxidize or reduce. Tap water typically has a positive ORP (+200 to +600 mV), meaning it acts as an oxidant. Kangen Water has a negative ORP, meaning it acts as an antioxidant — it can donate electrons to neutralize free radicals, the unstable molecules associated with oxidative stress.
A lower (more negative) ORP indicates greater antioxidant potential.
The Smallest Antioxidant
Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is the world's smallest molecule, allowing it to penetrate cell membranes and reach the mitochondria — the cell's energy center. Over 1,000 peer-reviewed studies have explored H₂'s potential as a selective antioxidant, targeting only the most harmful free radicals (hydroxyl radicals) while leaving beneficial reactive oxygen species intact.
Research on molecular hydrogen is ongoing. Enagic machines are certified medical devices in Japan.
How It Works
The Electrolysis Process
Tap Water Enters
Ordinary municipal or well water flows through a pre-filter that removes chlorine, sediment, and other impurities.
Electrolysis Chamber
The filtered water passes over platinum-coated titanium electrode plates. An electrical current splits the water molecules, separating minerals and restructuring the water.
Two Streams Emerge
Alkaline, hydrogen-rich water exits one side for drinking and cooking. Acidic water exits the other side for cleaning, sanitizing, and skin care.
Five Water Types
By adjusting the electrical current, Enagic machines produce 5 distinct water types: Strong Kangen (pH 11.5), Kangen Water (pH 8.5–9.5), Clean Water (pH 7), Slightly Acidic (pH 6), and Strong Acidic (pH 2.5).
Five Water Types
One Machine. Five Powerful Waters.
